a potted history
Greystoke is a picturesque village built around a green, boasting its own castle built in 1353 and occupied by the same family, the Howard's, since Elizabethan times. The magnificent 13th century church was used by villagers seeking refuge from bands of marauding Scots. The village is also the home of the late Gordon Richards horseracing stables and you can still see the horses being led out. There is a village shop and an 18th century coaching inn to partake in some much needed refreshments

Greystoke Gill Pottery - browse handmade stoneware, watch the professionals or maybe try your hand at throwing your own pot.
Greystoke Church - A magnificent 13th century church, steeped in history with a glorious East window, oak stalls and 'misericord' seats - carved under seat shelves.
Village pool - just the place to cool down after the days cycling exploits (opening times vary).
Beckstones Art Gallery - a specialist art gallery exhibiting original work by up to 40 of
the nation's top artist's.

Perfectly situated only 200 yds past the village green on the C2C route and offering plenty of space, cycle parking, cottage gardens, Red Squirrels (real and carved!) as well as fantastic views of Greystoke Castle and Nicky Richards racehorses filing past on the way to gallops.

The cafe also runs a number of rural craft and creative day workshops from a converted barn ie willow weaving, rag rug making, herbs and tinctures, art in the outdoors, reflexology - all by experts in their
own field. All days include food and refreshments. Support vehicles welcome.


route features
Situated midway between Keswick and Penrith, Greystoke is situated in the midst of some of the most picturesque countryside you will visit and is served by delightful rural roads. You follow the route into Penrith through delightful villages, such as Blencowe and Newton Reigny before turning left at the Agricultural College and take the short off-road section into Penrith.
