Formerly part of the old railway from Rookhope to Consett the path has been converted into an excellent traffic free route for walkers and cyclists.

Hownsgill Viaduct - located at mile marker 108.6 this very impressive 150 foot high bridge almost dares you to look down into the gorge and not feel sick!

route features

After the long slog up Rookhope Incline (or the even longer uphill slog from Stanhope) you will be relieved to find the Waskerly Way completely traffic free and almost all of it downhill all the way to the finish at Sunderland or Newcastle.

Bee Cottage is one of the favoured watering holes of seasoned C2Cers and lies on a bend in the Waskerley Way just beyond Park Head Plantation. It is on the edge of a pretty little coppice and a couple of miles before the A68 at Castleside.

Take a break on the 100 mile marker and book in. This is a licensed B&B with tea room three miles north of Stanhope on the Waskerley Way. It's also five miles from Rookhope across the grouse moor and 10 miles from Consett. AONB with beautiful panoramic views and downhill all the way (almost) to the coast.
